The importance of open data lies in the fact that it is one of the strategic priorities the economies of modern and developed countries focus on, as open data helps entrepreneurs drive innovation, enter markets, and identify and seize opportunities. In addition, open data supports decision-making and enhances transparency between public and private sectors.
Open data is an essential pillar of the digital transformation in the Kingdom and contributes to realizing the objectives of Vision 2030. It is critical as it provides citizens with the raw materials they need to engage with their governments, become part of improving public services, and participate more in government affairs.

On February 03, 2022, SDAIA announced the launch of the Open Data Strategy, which lays the foundation for a new phase for open data in the Kingdom. The Strategy aims to increase transparency, promote innovation to support the realization of Vision 2030’s goals, elevate the Kingdom's ranking in international indicators related to open data, and enhance data quality. Another goal is supporting the area of insights to ensure appropriate decision-making in the fields of research and innovation, in addition to developing data-driven products, including their applications and digital solutions. The Open Data Strategy encompasses diverse initiatives that will be implemented in the coming years to maximize the benefit of open data, which will feed into the realization of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
SDAIA, as the competent authority, works to maximize the use of open data in the Kingdom by developing awareness and training programs and finding promising investment opportunities. This aims to advance development and support national economy, in line with Saudi Vision 2030’s objectives.
In addition to participating in local and international events and activities, SDAIA also places a high priority on encouraging the efforts of relevant government and private entities aiming to create added economic value.
